Hong Kong Performance in FSX

Post by martin[flytampa] » Mon Jun 30, 2008 3:55 am

Like other large urban airports in FSX, you should not expect being able to fly a complex aircraft like the PMDG 747 into Hong Kong with Maxed AI-Traffic, Maxed Display-Settings and complex Weather Themes the same way you fly a GA aircraft over wilderness scenery. Before you purchase, it is recommended that you take a look at FSX's default Hong Kong (VHHX). If you can't achieve a minumum of 30 FPS at the default Hong Kong, your computer is not suited to run this Addon in FSX.

The Hong Kong Installation program comes with several Install-Options disabled by default. The performance difference between default Options disabled and all Options check-marked is quite significant. Note that most of the disabled Options are performance-intense Animations and Effects that you only see under certain conditions. You will not be missing a single 3D building in Hong Kong by not installing these extra Options. The recommended way of installing Hong Kong for FSX is to run the Installer with the default Options first and then check the performance in FSX. If the performance is good on your computer, run the Installer again and select some, but not all the extra Options.

Below find a series of screenshots comparing default FSX with various Fly-HongKong installations. The minimum installation runs as fast as default FSX, while the maximum installation takes a reasonable performance hit considering the extra Effects. Note that these comparisons were made on what we consider the lowest-spec computer to run this Addon: AMD-4400, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 8600-GT 256MB. A Intel Core2, 2GB RAM and Nvidia 8800 series with 512MB is highly recommended and will result in higher FPS then shown below assuming the same settings are used.

FSX Water. Performance at Hong Kong varies a lot depending on your Water settings. Max 2.X may result in single digit FPS (with 3D building reflections), while on the same computer High 1.X can result in 30 FPS.

Light Bloom will reduce performance at HK by more then half. Our tests show 30 FPS without and 12 FPS with Bloom.

Anti-Alias. Certain types of AA settings in nHancer can result in a severe performance hit at Hong Kong. We highly recommend Multisampling instead of Super or Combined modes.

For more information and recommended FSX Display-Settings see the Hong Kong documentation.

In the install options, if the static jetways are unchecked the jetways are animated. Will the animated jetways be FSX default or custom made high quality jetways?

If you select Static Aircraft you are left with around 30 of the total 70 parking spots.

I have been in contact with the Author of MyTraffic and this is what he will have:

- Version 5.2 of MyTrafficX will introduce traffic for KaiTak out of the box.

- Version 5.1b of MyTrafficX schedules can be downloaded and installed into the /MyTraffcic/Scenery/ folder. http://www.fsrail.com/VHHX-EGLC.rar

Here are my results with the following set up:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0 gig
2 Gigs Corsair XMS
XFX 8800 GT 512 meg

Weather is set to fair, I'm using FEX with super HD clouds. All images are Non-SDK Mode, default Trike used for All Tests. The most complex plane I have for FSX is the ATR-72, I loose 7-10 fps using the ATR VC in all tests.

FSX default ones
I was just wondering why you guys don't make custom animated jetways. Your scenery is great so I would think it would make a great addition. I know it's possible because FSDT uses custom jetways with their sceneries. I was just wondering why.

I'll give you my straight & honest answer. The Jetway mechanism documentation that the FSX SDK provides is so bad & incomplete it can be compared to a 1 page quick-guide to building your own space shuttle.

This got me highly upset from the start because it required weeks of guesswork or having a hotline to ask the responsible party at Aces directly. Only now, 2 years after FSX's release, this very month to be exact, has a public tutorial been posted. I may look into jetways at a future time again, but basically I am just highly upset about how this has been handled. This may sound strange to some, but I have a big problem with Addon development based on non-public insider information.

The reason I show a different fps is I have AI on and at 100%, defualt FSX VHHX has no AI traffic in my tests.

Same FSX and Nvidia settings, SDK compliance mode.

:D

Good going.

I am glad, you are giving us options. Instead of making a choice for us and then blowing smoke in advert style "Truly FSX Complaint" .

Looking forward to it.
